From long-term pain in both knees to walking comfortably again following robotic knee replacement and guided rehabilitation.
Condition: Medial compartment arthritis
Treatment: Robotic knee replacement
Care location: Bengaluru
Mrs. Alfosine, a resident of Congo, had been living with long-term pain in both knees caused by medial compartment arthritis. Seeking specialist care, she travelled to Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru.
Long-term pain in both knees caused by medial compartment arthritis affected comfortable walking and everyday activities.
Following detailed evaluation, an individual treatment plan was prepared and robotic knee replacement was performed for both knees.
With structured physiotherapy and rehabilitation, Mrs. Alfosine regained mobility and was able to walk comfortably.
Medial compartment arthritis affects the inner portion of the knee, where protective cartilage gradually wears down.
Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, swelling and difficulty with walking or climbing stairs. Treatment depends on the areas involved, severity of arthritis and the patient’s overall health.
The knee has three main compartments. The medial compartment lies on the inner side. When cartilage in this area wears down, movement can become painful and restricted.
Not every patient requires surgery. Depending on the clinical assessment, care may include activity modification, medicines, physiotherapy, weight management or injections. Knee replacement may be considered when symptoms significantly affect daily life and non-surgical treatment no longer provides sufficient relief.
After a detailed evaluation, Mrs. Alfosine underwent robotic knee replacement surgery for both knees under the care of Dr. Samarth Arya, Consultant – Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement and Robotic Surgeon.
Robotic technology supported accurate surgical planning and helped tailor treatment to her individual anatomy and condition. The system assists the surgeon; it does not perform surgery independently, and the surgeon remains in control throughout the procedure.
Following surgery, Mrs. Alfosine received dedicated rehabilitation and physiotherapy from the team led by Mr. Naveen.
A personalised rehabilitation programme may help patients gradually improve movement, muscle strength, balance and confidence while walking.
Mrs. Alfosine can now walk comfortably and is preparing to return to Congo. She expressed her gratitude to Dr. Samarth Arya and the physiotherapy team for the care and support received throughout treatment and recovery.
Her experience highlights the role of detailed assessment, individualised surgical planning and guided rehabilitation following knee replacement.
An orthopaedic evaluation can help identify the cause of persistent knee pain or stiffness and explain the treatment options appropriate for your condition.
