Walking Pain-Free Again After Complex Hip Treatment – Mr. Jacques’ Story

PATIENT STORY

Walking Pain-Free Again After Complex Hip Treatment – Mr. Jacques’ Story

From severe pain and implant-related infection to returning to normal life following carefully planned two-stage hip treatment.

Condition: Implant-related bone infection and limb-length discrepancy

Treatment: Two-stage infection management and hip replacement

Care location: Bengaluru

Years after a serious accident in 2013, Mauritian resident Mr. Jacques Henri Sylvio began experiencing severe pain in his affected leg. X-rays and scans showed that his existing implant had shifted from its original position.

01 · The Challenge

A severe bone infection weakened the supporting bone, causing the implant to sink and contributing to pain and a significant limb-length discrepancy.

02 · The Treatment

The affected implant was removed, osteomyelitis was treated with targeted antibiotics, and hip replacement was performed after the infection had been appropriately managed.

03 · The Outcome

Following treatment and recovery, Mr. Jacques became pain-free and returned to his normal daily life.

Understanding His Condition

An implant requires healthy surrounding bone for support and stability. A deep infection can damage this bone and affect the implant’s position.

Mr. Jacques’ evaluation showed that infection had caused the implant to sink, contributing to severe pain and a significant difference in limb length.

What Is an Implant-Related Bone Infection?

Osteomyelitis is an infection involving the bone. When it develops around an orthopaedic implant, it may weaken the surrounding bone and compromise the implant’s stability.

Symptoms can vary but may include persistent pain, swelling, difficulty walking and changes around the affected joint. Evaluation may involve clinical examination, blood tests, X-rays, scans and other investigations.

Treatment depends on the type of infection, condition of the implant and bone, and the patient’s overall health.

A Carefully Planned Two-Stage Treatment

At Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, Mr. Jacques was treated by Dr. Samarth Arya, Consultant – Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement and Robotic Surgeon, together with Dr. Neha Mishra, Consultant – Infectious Diseases.

Because the active bone infection required careful management, the medical team followed a two-stage treatment plan. The first stage involved removing the affected implant and administering targeted antibiotics for osteomyelitis.

After the infection had been appropriately managed, Mr. Jacques underwent hip replacement surgery.

Coordinated Infection and Surgical Care

The staged approach allowed the infection and implant-related problem to be addressed separately.

Coordination between the orthopaedic and infectious-disease specialists played an important role in planning and guiding his treatment.

Back to Normal Life

Following treatment and recovery, Mr. Jacques is now pain-free and has returned to his normal daily life.

His experience highlights the importance of identifying infection, planning treatment in stages and coordinating care across medical specialties.
