An avid swimmer regained full arm function after undergoing biceps tendon repair surgery under the care of Dr. Samarth Arya at Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru.
Condition: Distal biceps tendon rupture
Treatment: Biceps tendon repair surgery
Care location: Bengaluru
An avid swimmer suffered a serious arm injury while swimming in the Tungabhadra River. The injury caused the biceps tendon to detach from the forearm bone, resulting in pain, weakness and difficulty using the affected arm.
An MRI scan confirmed a biceps tendon rupture. He subsequently consulted Dr. Samarth Arya at Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, for further evaluation and treatment.
The patient sustained a biceps tendon rupture while swimming. Significant tendon retraction and his well-developed biceps muscle made the injury more complex and affected the strength and function of his arm.
Following clinical examination and MRI evaluation, Dr. Samarth Arya performed biceps tendon repair surgery to reattach the ruptured tendon securely to the forearm bone.
After surgery and structured physiotherapy, the patient gradually recovered his arm movement and strength. He regained functional use of the arm and returned to his active lifestyle.
The patient experienced a sudden injury while swimming in the Tungabhadra River. Following the incident, he developed pain, weakness and difficulty moving the affected arm.
An MRI revealed a biceps tendon rupture. Further examination showed that the tendon had retracted considerably from its normal attachment point. The patient’s significant biceps muscle mass added to the complexity of the condition.
Because the tendon was completely detached from the forearm bone, surgical repair was considered necessary to restore the connection between the muscle and bone.
The distal biceps tendon connects the biceps muscle in the upper arm to the radius bone in the forearm. It helps with bending the elbow and rotating the forearm.
A rupture may occur when the arm is exposed to a sudden or excessive force. Symptoms may include sudden elbow pain, bruising, swelling, weakness and difficulty rotating the forearm.
Treatment depends on the extent of the injury, the patient’s activity level, overall health and functional requirements. Complete ruptures in active individuals may require surgery to reattach the tendon to the bone.
At Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, the patient was treated by Dr. Samarth Arya, Consultant in Orthopaedic and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgery.
Following clinical and MRI evaluation, biceps tendon repair surgery was planned. During the procedure, the retracted tendon was carefully identified and securely reattached to the forearm bone.
The objective of surgery was to restore the natural connection between the biceps muscle and the forearm, supporting the recovery of arm strength, movement and function.
Every tendon injury is different. The extent of the rupture, degree of tendon retraction, condition of the muscle and time since the injury can influence treatment planning.
In this case, the patient’s significant muscle mass and extensive tendon retraction required careful surgical management. The tendon was repaired and reattached to the forearm bone to support functional recovery.
The patient received coordinated care throughout his surgery and recovery at Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road.
Following the procedure, structured physiotherapy helped him gradually restore movement, rebuild strength and regain functional use of the affected arm.
He expressed his appreciation to Dr. Samarth Arya and the hospital team for supporting him throughout his treatment and rehabilitation journey.
Sudden elbow pain, weakness, bruising or difficulty rotating the forearm following an injury should be evaluated by an orthopaedic specialist. A detailed clinical examination and appropriate imaging can identify the extent of the injury and determine whether physiotherapy, immobilisation, surgery or another treatment may be suitable.
